Intentions or choices are the force that propels consciousness from one life to the next.

ฉบับหลวงเจตนาสูตรที่ ๑

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี … พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุย่อมจงใจ ย่อมดำริและครุ่นคิดถึงสิ่งใด สิ่งนั้นเป็นอารัมณปัจจัยเพื่อความตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่อมีอารัมณปัจจัยความตั้งมั่นแห่งวิญญาณจึงมี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นตั้งมั่นแล้ว เจริญขึ้นแล้ว ความบังเกิดคือภพใหม่ต่อไปจึงมี เมื่อมีความบังเกิดคือภพใหม่ต่อไป ชาติ ชราและมรณะ โสกปริเทวทุกขโทมนัสและอุปายาสจึงมีต่อไป ความเกิดขึ้นแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยประการอย่างนี้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุไม่จงใจ ไม่ดำริ แต่ยังครุ่นคิดถึงสิ่งใด สิ่งนั้นเป็นอารัมณปัจจัยเพื่อความตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่อมีอารัมณปัจจัย ความตั้งมั่นแห่งวิญญาณจึงมี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นตั้งมั่นแล้ว เจริญขึ้นแล้ว ความบังเกิดคือภพใหม่ต่อไปจึงมี เมื่อมีความบังเกิดคือภพใหม่ต่อไป ชาติชราและมรณะ โสกปริเทวทุกขโทมนัสและอุปายาสจึงมีต่อไป ความเกิดแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยประการอย่างนี้ ฯ

ข้อ ๑๔๖ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุไม่จงใจ ไม่ดำริ และไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงสิ่งใด สิ่งนั้นย่อมไม่เป็นอารัมณปัจจัยเพื่อความตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่อไม่มีอารัมณปัจจัยความตั้งมั่นแห่งวิญญาณจึงไม่มี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นไม่ตั้งมั่นแล้ว ไม่เจริญขึ้นแล้ว ความบังเกิดคือภพใหม่ต่อไปจึงไม่มี เมื่อความบังเกิดคือภพใหม่ต่อไปไม่มี ชาติชราและมรณะ โสกปริเทวทุกข โทมนัสและอุปายาสต่อไปจึงดับ ความดับแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยประการอย่างนี้ ฯ

  4. 1.1

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    At Sāvatthī.

  5. 1.2

    “Yañca, bhikkhave, ceteti yañca pakappeti yañca anuseti, ārammaṇametaṁ hoti viññāṇassa ṭhitiyā.

    “Mendicants, what you intend or plan, and what you have underlying tendencies for become a support for the continuation of consciousness.

  6. 1.3

    Ārammaṇe sati patiṭṭhā viññāṇassa hoti.

    When this support exists, consciousness becomes established.

  7. 1.4

    Tasmiṁ patiṭṭhite viññāṇe virūḷhe āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti hoti.

    When consciousness is established and grows, there is regeneration into a new state of existence in the future.

  8. 1.5

    Āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbattiyā sati āyatiṁ jāti jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti.

    When there is regeneration into a new state of existence in the future, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

    Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

    That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

  10. 2.1

    No ce, bhikkhave, ceteti no ce pakappeti, atha ce anuseti, ārammaṇametaṁ hoti viññāṇassa ṭhitiyā.

    If you don’t intend or plan, but still have underlying tendencies, this becomes a support for the continuation of consciousness.

  11. 2.2

    Ārammaṇe sati patiṭṭhā viññāṇassa hoti.

    When this support exists, consciousness becomes established.

    Tasmiṁ patiṭṭhite viññāṇe virūḷhe āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti hoti.

    If you don’t intend or plan or have underlying tendencies, this doesn’t become a support for the continuation of consciousness.

    Ārammaṇe asati patiṭṭhā viññāṇassa na hoti.

    With no support, consciousness is not established.

  17. 3.3

    Tadappatiṭṭhite viññāṇe avirūḷhe āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti na hoti.

    When consciousness is not established and doesn’t grow, there’s no regeneration into a new state of existence in the future.

  18. 3.4

    Āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbattiyā asati āyatiṁ jāti jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti.

    When there is no regeneration into a new state of existence in the future, future rebirth, old age, and death cease, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

  19. 3.5

    Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotī”ti.

    That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”
