Natthiputtasamasutta

Like many of these discourses, here the Buddha repeats a god’s verses with a subtle twist towards the Dhamma.

ฉบับหลวงนัตถิปุตตสมสูตรที่ ๓

เทวดานั้น ครั้นยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่งแล้วแล ได้กล่าวคาถานี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ความรักเสมอด้วยความรักบุตรไม่มี ทรัพย์เสมอด้วยโคย่อมไม่มี แสงสว่างเสมอด้วยดวงอาทิตย์ย่อมไม่มี สระทั้งหลายมีทะเลเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ความรักเสมอด้วยความรักตนไม่มี ทรัพย์เสมอด้วยข้าวเปลือกย่อมไม่มี แสงสว่างเสมอด้วยปัญญาย่อมไม่มี ฝนต่างหากเป็นสระยอดเยี่ยม ฯ

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

  5. 1.2

    Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “Natthi puttasamaṁ pemaṁ,

    “There’s no fondness like that for a child,

  7. 2.2

    natthi gosamitaṁ dhanaṁ;

    no wealth equal to cattle,

  8. 2.3

    Natthi sūriyasamā ābhā,

    no light like that of the sun,

  9. 2.4

    samuddaparamā sarā”ti.

    and of streams the ocean is paramount.”

    “Natthi attasamaṁ pemaṁ,

    “There’s no fondness like that for oneself,

    natthi dhaññasamaṁ dhanaṁ;

    no wealth equal to grain,

    Natthi paññāsamā ābhā,

    no light like that of wisdom,

  13. 3.4

    vuṭṭhi ve paramā sarā”ti.

    and of streams the rain is paramount.”
