Sabbhisutta

A series of deities give verses praising association with the good, and the Buddha gives his own response.

ฉบับหลวงสัพภิสูตรที่ ๑

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับมาแล้วอย่างนี้

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ครั้งนั้นแล เมื่อปฐมยามล่วงไปแล้ว พวกเทวดาสตุลลปกายิกา(ผู้เทิดทูนธรรมของสัตบุรุษ)มากด้วยกัน มีวรรณงาม ยังพระวิหารเชตวันให้สว่าง ทั่วกัน เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ครั้นแล้ว จึงถวายอภิวาทพระผู้มีพระภาค แล้วจึงยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ฯ

เทวดาองค์หนึ่ง ครั้นยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่งแล้ว ได้กล่าวคาถานี้ในสำนัก พระผู้มีพระภาคว่า บุคคลควรนั่งร่วมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ ควรทำความสนิทกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลทราบสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว มีแต่คุณอันประเสริฐ ไม่มีโทษอันลามกเลย ฯ

ลำดับนั้น เทวดาอื่นอีกได้กล่าวคาถานี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า บุคคลควรนั่งร่วมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ ควรทำความสนิทกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลทราบสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมได้ปัญญา หาได้ปัญญาแต่คนอันธพาลอื่นไม่ ฯ

ลำดับนั้นแล เทวดาอื่นอีกได้กล่าวคาถานี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า บุคคลควรนั่งร่วมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ ควรทำความสนิทกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลทราบสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมไม่เศร้าโศก ในท่ามกลางแห่งเรื่องเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งความเศร้าโศก ฯ

ลำดับนั้นแล เทวดาอื่นอีกได้กล่าวคาถานี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า บุคคลควรนั่งร่วมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ ควรทำความสนิทกับพวกสัตบุรุษ

บุคคลทราบสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมไพโรจน์ในท่ามกลางแห่งญาติ ฯ

ลำดับนั้นแล เทวดาอื่นอีกได้กล่าวคาถานี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า บุคคลควรนั่งร่วมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ ควรทำความสนิทกับพวกสัตบุรุษ สัตว์ทั้งหลายทราบสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้วย่อมไปสู่สุคติ ฯ

ในลำดับนั้นแล เทวดาอื่นอีกได้กล่าวคาถานี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า บุคคลควรนั่งร่วมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ ควรทำความสนิทกับพวกสัตบุรุษ สัตว์ทั้งหลายทราบสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้วย่อมดำรงอยู่สบายเนืองๆ ฯ

ในลำดับนั้นแล เทวดาอื่นอีก ได้กราบทูลคำนี้กะพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค คำของใครหนอแลเป็นสุภาษิต ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสบอกว่า คำของพวกท่านทั้งหมดเป็นสุภาษิตโดยปริยาย ก็แต่พวกท่านจงฟังซึ่งคำของเราบ้าง บุคคลควรนั่งร่วมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ ควรทำความสนิทกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลทราบสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมพ้นจากทุกข์ทั้งปวง ฯ

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

    So I have heard.

    ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    Atha kho sambahulā satullapakāyikā devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu.

    Then, late at night, several glorious deities of the host of a hundred felicities, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side.

    Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Standing to one side, one deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    sabbhi kubbetha santhavaṁ;

    Try to get close to the virtuous!

    seyyo hoti na pāpiyo”ti.

    paññā labbhati nāññato”ti.

    wisdom is gained—but not from anyone else.”

    “Sabbhireva samāsetha,

    “Associate only with the virtuous!

    sabbhi kubbetha santhavaṁ;

    Try to get close to the virtuous!

    Sataṁ saddhammamaññāya,

    ñātimajjhe virocatī”ti.

    you dazzle among your relatives.”

    Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then another deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “Sabbhireva samāsetha,

    “Associate only with the virtuous!

  29. 10.2

    sabbhi kubbetha santhavaṁ;

    Try to get close to the virtuous!

    Sataṁ saddhammamaññāya,

    sattā gacchanti suggatin”ti.

    sentient beings go to a good place.”

    Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Then another deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “Sabbhireva samāsetha,

    “Associate only with the virtuous!

  34. 12.2

    sabbhi kubbetha santhavaṁ;

    Try to get close to the virtuous!

  35. 12.3

    Sataṁ saddhammamaññāya,

    Understanding the true teaching of the good,

    sattā tiṭṭhanti sātatan”ti.

    sentient beings live happily.”

  37. 13.1

    Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then another deity said to the Buddha,

    “kassa nu kho, bhagavā, subhāsitan”ti?

    “Sir, who has spoken well?”

  39. 14.1

    “Sabbāsaṁ vo subhāsitaṁ pariyāyena, api ca mamapi suṇātha—

    “You’ve all spoken well in your own way. However, listen to me also:

    Sabbhireva samāsetha,

    Associate only with the virtuous!

  41. 15.2

    sabbhi kubbetha santhavaṁ;

    Try to get close to the virtuous!

  42. 15.3

    Sataṁ saddhammamaññāya,

    Understanding the true teaching of the good,

  43. 15.4

    sabbadukkhā pamuccatī”ti.

    you’re released from all suffering.”

  44. 16.1

    Idamavoca bhagavā.

    That is what the Buddha said.

  45. 16.2

    Attamanā tā devatāyo bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyiṁsūti.

    Delighted, those deities bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on their right, before vanishing right there.
