SN 9.8

Kulagharaṇīsutta

A deity becomes concerned of the gossip about a certain monk who had become close with a family in the village. Taking the form of one of the women of the family, she tries to warn him; but he says a true practitioner is not concerned with gossip.

สมัยหนึ่ง ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งพำนักอยู่ในราวป่าแห่งหนึ่งในแคว้นโกศล สมัยนั้นแล ภิกษุนั้นไปอยู่คลุกคลีในสกุลแห่งหนึ่งเกินเวลา ฯ

ครั้งนั้นแล เทวดาผู้สิงอยู่ในราวป่านั้นมีความเอ็นดูใคร่ประโยชน์แก่ภิกษุนั้น ใคร่จะให้เธอสังเวชจึงเนรมิตเพศแห่งหญิงแม่เรือนในตระกูลนั้นเข้าไปหาถึงที่อยู่ ครั้นแล้วได้กล่าวกะภิกษุนั้นด้วยคาถาว่า ชนทั้งหลายย่อมประชุมสนทนากันที่ฝั่งแม่น้ำ ในโรงที่พัก ในสภา และในถนน ส่วนเราและท่านเป็นดังรือ ฯ

แท้จริงเสียงที่เป็นข้าศึกมีมากอันท่านผู้มีตบะ พึงอดทน ไม่พึงเก้อเขิน เพราะเหตุนั้น เพราะสัตว์หาได้เศร้าหมองด้วยเหตุนั้นไม่ แต่ผู้ใดมักสะดุ้งเพราะเสียงประดุจเนื้อทรายในป่า นักปราชญ์กล่าวผู้นั้นว่า มีจิตเบา วัตรของเขาย่อมไม่สมบูรณ์ ฯ

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro bhikkhu kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.

    At one time one of the monks was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.

    Tena kho pana samayena so bhikkhu aññatarasmiṁ kule ativelaṁ ajjhogāḷhappatto viharati.

    Now at that time that monk had become too closely involved in the affairs of a certain family.

    Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tassa bhikkhuno anukampikā atthakāmā taṁ bhikkhuṁ saṁvejetukāmā yā tasmiṁ kule kulagharaṇī, tassā vaṇṇaṁ abhinimminitvā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    The deity haunting that forest had sympathy for that monk, wanting what’s best for him. So, wanting to stir him up, they manifested in the appearance of the mistress of that family, approached the monk, and addressed him in verse:

    “Nadītīresu saṇṭhāne,

    “At river banks and guest houses,

  8. 2.2

    sabhāsu rathiyāsu ca;

    hotels and highways,

  9. 2.3

    Janā saṅgamma mantenti,

    people gather to gossip about

  10. 2.4

    mañca tañca kimantaran”ti.

    what’s going on between you and me.”

    “Bahūhi saddā paccūhā,

    “There are many sounds echoing

  12. 3.2

    khamitabbā tapassinā;

    that a fervent ascetic must endure.

  13. 3.3

    Na tena maṅku hotabbaṁ,

    They ought not be dismayed by that,

  14. 3.4

    na hi tena kilissati.

    for that’s not what defiles you.

  15. 4.1

    Yo ca saddaparittāsī,

    If you’re startled by every little sound,

  16. 4.2

    vane vātamigo yathā;

    like a wind-deer in the wood,

  17. 4.3

    Lahucittoti taṁ āhu,

    they’ll call you ‘flighty minded’;

  18. 4.4

    nāssa sampajjate vatan”ti.

    and your practice won’t succeed.”
