If a perfected one has gone beyond all sense of self, would they still refer to themselves as “I”?

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ท. ภิกษุใดเป็นผู้ไกลจากกิเลส มีกิจทำเสร็จแล้ว มีอาสวะสิ้นแล้ว เป็นผู้ทรงไว้ซึ่งร่างกายอันมีในที่สุด ภิกษุนั้นพึงกล่าวว่า เราพูดดังนี้บ้าง บุคคลทั้งหลายอื่นพูดกะเราดังนี้บ้าง ฯ
ภ. ภิกษุใดเป็นผู้ไกลจากกิเลส มีกิจทำเสร็จแล้ว มีอาสวะสิ้นแล้ว เป็นผู้ทรงไว้ซึ่งร่างกายอันมีในที่สุด ภิกษุนั้นพึงกล่าวว่า เราพูดดังนี้บ้าง บุคคลทั้งหลายอื่นพูดกะเราดังนี้บ้าง ภิกษุนั้นฉลาด ทราบคำพูดในโลก พึงกล่าวตามสมมติที่พูดกัน ฯ
ท. ภิกษุใดเป็นพระอรหันต์ มีกิจทำเสร็จแล้ว มีอาสวะสิ้นแล้ว เป็นผู้ทรงไว้ซึ่งร่างกายอันมีในที่สุด ภิกษุนั้นยังติดมานะหรือหนอ จึงกล่าวว่า เราพูดดังนี้บ้าง บุคคลทั้งหลายอื่นพูดกะเราดังนี้บ้าง ฯ
ภ. กิเลสเป็นเครื่องผูกทั้งหลาย มิได้มีแก่ภิกษุที่ละมานะเสียแล้ว มานะและคันถะทั้งปวง อันภิกษุนั้นกำจัดเสียแล้ว ภิกษุเป็นผู้มีปัญญาดีล่วงเสียแล้วซึ่งความสำคัญ ภิกษุนั้นพึงกล่าวว่า เราพูดดังนี้บ้าง บุคคลทั้งหลายอื่นพูดกะเราดังนี้บ้าง ภิกษุนั้นฉลาดทราบคำพูดในโลก พึงกล่าวตามสมมติที่พูดกัน ฯ

“Yo hoti bhikkhu arahaṁ katāvī,
“When a mendicant is perfected, well-versed,

Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī;
with defilements ended, bearing the final body:
- 1.3
Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya,
would they say, ‘I speak’,
- 1.4
Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyyā”ti.
or even ‘they speak to me’?”

is such a mendicant drawing close to conceit

Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyyā”ti.
or even ‘they speak to me’?”

“Pahīnamānassa na santi ganthā,
“Someone who has given up conceit has no ties,

Vidhūpitā mānaganthassa sabbe;
the ties of conceit are all dissipated.

Sa vītivatto maññataṁ sumedho,
Though that intelligent person
has passed beyond conceiving, - 4.4
Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya.
